Experience

Apart from the experience I have tutoring on a part-time basis in college, I have much experience teaching in various capacities. As a fully-credentialed teacher (Multiple-subject Teaching Credential), I taught Kindergarten in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)for four years and, prior to that, worked in the district as a substitute teacher in grades Kindergarten through Third. I also have extensive experience working with preschool-aged children, having spent six years employed in the Montebello Unified School District as an instructional assistant in a Head Start classroom. Subsequent to this experience, I had the opportunity to impart to others some of the knowledge I had acquired working with preschool-aged children. At such colleges as East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park and Rio Hondo College in the city of Whittier, I taught Child Development courses to college students preparing for careers in the field of Early Childhood Education. Among the courses I taught were "Child Growth and Development," "Principles and Practices of Early Childhood Education," "Experiences in Language Arts," and "Family Child Care."

Hobbies

My biggest hobby for the past few years has been teaching myself Spanish. Having grown up without any Spanish skills at all, I have taught myself enough Spanish to be able to read, write, and communicate on a basic, if not intermediate level. This has not been without a lot of hard work, including daily reading and writing in Spanish as well as listening to Spanish-language radio and watching Spanish-language television. When I am not developing my Spanish skills by interacting with the language in one way or another, I am tending to my many trees and plants, as I seem to have become a rather skilled gardener and landscaper. I enjoy working in the garden not only because it gives me a chance to "commune with nature," but because I'm able to spend "quality time" with my four cats. I have always had a soft spot in my heart not only for cats, but for all animals, including farm animals. That's why I made the decision many years ago to become a vegetarian. It was something I could do to make the world a better place for animals--and it's what I consider to be my greatest accomplishment in life.
