1) My current dissertation study is titled "Understanding Retention and Graduation Rates among 1st and 2nd Year Latina/o Students in For-Profit Colleges" 2) As a Mexican-American growing up in California, I was aware of the diversity in California’s population and language. I watched some my own family struggle with English as a second language and other family members struggle with English as their first language. I knew that a difficulty with language was an issue among many people alike. I very soon understood the importance and benefit of effectively communicating and writing in the dominant English language; competent communication skills are critical to succeed in careers, no matter which career field was in question. This is one of the lessons I hope to pass down to my students.
